Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour

Tour Itinerary: Whale Sharks Snorkeling Tour

You’ll enjoy a scenic 2-hour ride from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz in our comfortable, air conditioned private van. On arrival, we’ll check in with our partners and hop on the boat for a 15-30 minute ride.

Arriving at the area, we begin the search! The conservation of the whale sharks of La Paz is taken very seriously, so only one group of swimmers and their guide are allowed in the water with each shark. This not only ensures the sharks are not stressed or overwhelmed, but means we get our a shark all to ourselves!

The unique aspect of seeing whale sharks in La Paz is that it is a feeding area. This means we have a high chance of seeing the sharks go vertical just under the surface, and use their huge mouths as vacuums to suck in nutrient-filled water. This is a photographic opportunity like no other!

Usually, there are numerous sharks in the area, so we get the chance to swim with various different ones. After 2 hours or so, we will head back to shore for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Then, with fully bellies and happy memories, you can snooze your way back to Cabo San Lucas as our driver takes us home.

Meet “La Gaviota” Island, home of the Blue-footed booby (season: Aug-Nov) and other endemic birds.

Finally, we’ll arrive at one of Mexico’s most beautiful and pristine beaches, Balandra. Where lunch will be served and you’ll have time to be on the beach for a while or even have a small hike around.

Facts about Whale Sharks:

Interestingly enough, Whale Sharks are not actually whales, but the largest fish in the world! Whale sharks are unable to bite or chew, so they filter feed as they swim through the water, opening their mouths wide to sieve plankton and other tiny marine animals.
Whale sharks might be slow but they migrate very long distances. Moving at speeds of no more than 4 kph/3 mph, a single whale shark can travel 12,874km/8,000 miles or more, in just three years. They can grow up to 40 feet long, but on average they grow to 18 to 32.8 feet and weigh 20.6 tons.
Whale shark females produce eggs, but the young hatch inside of the mother instead of in the water like most fish. Then, the female gives birth to about 300 live young. Many never make it to maturity, though.
Whale sharks have a long childhood – at the age of 25, the offspring are ready to have their own young. They may live up to a whopping 100 years old!
